THE ART OF THE KUNA INDIANS:
Beautiful famous Molas by Kuna Indians: Are ethnograpic Art coming from the rain forest along the Colombian-Panameniam border, by Kunas Natives. Mola is  the Kuna Indian word for blouse, but the term Molas has come to mean the elaborated  embroidered panels that make the front and back of a Kuna Woman!s blouse.
The art has been transmitted from grandmother mola maker to young daughters for centuries,putting in their work a defenitive form of individual expression. Mola pannels have become much sought afeter and collected examples of textile art. The artistry of a mola reflects a synthesis of traditional Kuna culture.
 Kuna women have made their bright colored adn strikingly unique blouse pannels for more than a hundred years.Made by hand with thousands of tiny stich close together with several pieces of layers spending several days to make only one panel.
The process is very meticulous one of the artisan begin by stacking several squares of differently colored fabric on top of each other.
She cuts a pattern into the stacks,revealing just one of the underlayers. Each piece takes between one or three weeks to complete. The drawing represente the events of daily life: usually they portrait animals,family life or cultural designs that are as old as the kunas themselves: sea shells,fishes,boats,fishermen, turtles,and a great variety of birds that are part of  their surroundings the paradise as they call these Islands. The theme of Mola is determined by the imagination of  the artist.

Tumbaga is an alloy composed mostly of gold and copper. It has a significantly lower melting point than gold or copperalone. It is harder than copper, but maintains malleabilibilty after being pounded.
Tumbaga can be treated with a simple acid, like citric acid, to dissolve copper off the surface. What remains is a shiny layer of nearly pure gold on top of a harder, more durable copper-gold alloy sheet. This process is referred to as depletion gilding.
Tumbaga was widely used by the pre-Columbian cultures of Central America to make religious objects. Like most gold alloys, tumbaga was versatile and could be cast, drawn, hammered, gilded, soldered, welded, plated, hardened, annealed, polished, engraved, embossed, and inlaid.
The proportion of gold to copper in artifacts varies widely; items have been found with as much as 97% gold while others instead contain 97% copper. Some tumbaga has also been found to be composed of metals besides gold and copper, up to 18% of the total mass of the tumbaga.
Tumbaga objects were often made using the lost wax technique and the alloy used was a mixture of copper (80%), silver (15%), and gold (5%). The indicated concentrations varied from object to object. Once the object was taken out of the cast, it was burned and as a consequence, copper from the surface of the object was oxidized to copper oxide and was then removed mechanically. The object was then placed in an oxidizing solution containing, it is believed, sodium chloride (salt), and ferric sulfate. This process removed through oxidation the silver from the surface of the object leaving only gold. When looking through a microscope, one may clearly see the empty spots from where the original elements copper and silver were removed.from Widipedia

 It ranged in content from 3-97% copper with a balance of gold and several trace metals as impurities; silver could be an impurity or a deliberate alloying element up to 18%.
 One of the reasons that the composition varies so widely is that it was also the name of the metal bars that were hastily produced from South American raw materials during the early years of European conquest and settlement.
 These bars were shipped back to Spain and separated back into pure copper, gold, and silver.

The Pre-Hispanic American metal smiths used tumbaga extensively.
 Alloying gold with 15-40% copper gives a metal that melts at 860°C (1580°F).
 The alloy is significantly harder than copper, but is malleable like gold and can be hammered.
 It is therefore ideally suited to the formation of elaborate objects made of hammered sheet metal.
 Its relatively low melting point was a big advantage to early metal workers. 
The alloy could be made to look like pure gold by treating the finished face with an acid solution to dissolve 
the copper and then hammering or polishing to join the gold, creating a uniform gold surface.

¿Qué es el TUMBAGO? Aleación de cobre y oro heredado de la cultura PRECOLOMBINA que nos legara la
técnica de la cera perdida (orfebrería prehispánica) Cuando los conquistadores llegaron al nuevo mundo en
lo que hoy se conoce como Colombia, descubrieron que en los pueblos indígenas se hacían figuras de
animales, reptiles, aves, murciélagos, hombres humanos, figuras sagradas y criaturas míticas. Estas
figuras representaban los seres vivos que consideraban sagrados o santos. Ellos creían que recibían
poderes de estas criaturas y estas figuras fueron usadas a menudo en un collar o dijes estatuillas y, a
menudo enterrados con ellos. Las piezas fueron hechas de una aleación de oro y cobre con plata presente en
ocasiones. El cobre bajaba la temperatura de fusión de la aleación y, por tanto hacia más fácil trabajar
con ellos. Los conquistadores llamaron a esta aleación de metal-TUMBAGO. Grandes cantidades de estas
hermosas piezas hechas a mano por los indígenas se fundieron en lingotes por los españoles para enviarlos
de viaje a España. Algunos de estos lingotes se han encontrado en algunos naufragios españoles. Los
españoles simplemente hacían un agujero en bruto en el suelo y se vertía el líquido caliente en el
orificio para formar el lingote. No todas estas piezas fueron fundidas y robadas por los conquistadores. Un
número desconocido de estas piezas se conservan hoy en día y algunos originales en el Museo del Oro y
muchas reproducciones se comercializan por los amigos de la orfobreria PRECOLOMBINA.. Esta es una pequeña
pieza que representa una FIGURA PRECOLOMBINA . Esta pieza hecha a mano .Aquí hay una oportunidad de poseer
